Fructo-oligosaccharides liquid are chains of plant sugars.
FOS liquid is not digested in the small intestine, so it passes to the large intestine,
where it is broken down (fermented) by beneficial large intestinal bacteria into gases, like hydrogen,
and short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), which are absorbed and can provide 1.5-2.7 kilocalories per gram .
Fructo-oligosaccharides are commonly used by mouth for constipation.
Some people use them for weight loss, to prevent traveler's diarrhea, and to treat high cholesterol levels and osteoporosis. But
there is limited scientific research to support these other uses.
In foods, fructo-oligosaccharides are used as a sweetener.
